On February 1st, 1953, a natural disaster occurred in the southwest of the Netherlands. A storm surge covered the islands of the province of Zeeland, South Holland and parts of West Brabant. The composer Johan de Wit comes from this area and knows the impact of this flood on the lives of many. He dedicates this work to the silent suffering of the bereaved (the trauma would never be discussed, or often only in old age). World premieres during the 60th anniversary celebrations in Tholen and Vlissingen in 2013 with choirs from the disaster area and the symphonic wind orchestra of the Free Waldorf School Kassel.

“For a long time I had been concerned with the question: is it possible to transfer Debussy’s musical language on a brass band? I took the piano piece Passepied from Suite Bergamasque and adapted it very freely so that the goal of fitting French music into an English format could succeed. ” (Johan de Wit)

When Nelson Mandela died on December 5, 2013, de Wit began to write down “The Long Walk to Freedom” on the same day. Originally for a string quartet, actually also planned for an alto part, because he had wanted to set South African poems by Ingrid Jonker for a long time anyway. In the months that followed, the piece was transformed into a thoroughly composed three-movement work for euphonium, string orchestra and percussion.

En Chantant vers l’abîme – Singing to the abyss. The work describes, for example, the way in which we as humanity deal with Mother Earth. Cheerfully whistling into the verdirb. Singing loudly on the abyss. Johan de Wit composed this work in 2006. Well before the financial crisis and the “Fridays for Future” movement. Anyone who walks through the world awake has seen since 1972, when the Club of Rome published its report “The Limits to Growth”, that we all clearly close our eyes as a community and do not move. En chantant vers l’abîme is an ode to everyone who points the finger at politics and corporations, but doesn’t question their own lifestyle.
